The Basel Carnival always takes place during the week after Ash Wednesday in the city centre. The carnival comes to an end on Thursday morning at 4 am after having been kicked off on Monday morning at 4 am on the dot with the city lights going off just before the early morning procession “Morgenstraich”. The magic then starts with the stirring tunes of the drummers and piccolo players. These “Cliques” accompany around 200 huge illuminated lanterns decorated with cartoons making fun of local events that happened the year before. Waiting time until the “Morgenstraich” is spent savouring three typical specialities : Mehlsuppe (a hearty broth made from flour and onion) as well as onion and cheese pies.
