Excursions
The Stockalper's Castle (Stockalper Schloss) was built
between 1658 and 1678 by Kaspar Jodok von Stockalper, a wealthy
local merchant who made fortune in Milan. The castle, built around a
square courtyard, well reflects the princely family’s glamour. Its
three towers are named after the Three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior
and Balthazar.
This Baroque castle is the most famous of its kind
in Switzerland. Nowadays it houses the offices of the municipal
administration ; the district court of Ost Raron and Brig ; a
portrait gallery ; a furniture collection ; weapons ; documents ; a
theatre ; a library as well as the Stockalper archives. Take a
guided tour to discover the museum’s exhibition, the castle’s
chapel, the hall of knights with its portrait gallery and last but
not least the hall dedicated to the Three Wise Men. Touring the
castle truly is a highlight !
Plunge into the world of thermal spa Brigerbad, just 3 km west of
Brig. The longest Alpine slide (182 m) and the Olympic size
pool with 4 lanes among other attractions make for a lot of fun.
The village of Mund is nestled on the right side of the Rhone River,
just above Naters. It is the only place in Switzerland where
saffron is cultivated. As autumn arrives, the saffron fields
that cover 14'000 m2 turn lilac and 116 saffron growers gather to
harvest the stigmas from the crocuses.
